Types of training

If you would like to propose a different type of training opportunity, please contact us.

Visiting scholar/researcher

We frequently host visiting scientists and students in our research group. We encourage interested individuals who have access to financial support to contact us.

Unpaid internships &
Course credit

We are happy to host students who are looking for practical, real-life, hands-on experience in their field.  Trainees may choose a project we designed or propose their own.  Student-designed projects should align with the goals and needs of our research group.  We will work with the student to ensure that their experience is appropriate for the requirements of their institution and/or academic department.  Trainees who aren’t current or recent UGA students might be required to take an entrance exam or otherwise demonstrate appropriate background.  Please contact us for more information.

Subject areas

If you would like to propose training in a subject area not listed below, please contact us.

Molecular Modeling

Our lab specializes in developing and using computer models to study carbohydrates and their interactions with other molecules.

Some general topics include:

  • Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations
  • Force field (FF) development
  • Protocols development for the computational glycosciences
  • Carbohydrate-protein binding (CPB) studies
  • Glycoprotein (GP) studies
  • Development of website documentation and training materials
    • Great writing experience and the best way to learn a lot fast!

Relevant technologies include:

  • AMBER molecular modeling suite
  • VMD
  • Chimera
  • Autodock
  • Gaussian
  • GEMS & GMML
  • Group-developed modeling and analysis utilities

Computing

Not only does our lab use computer modeling extensively in our own work, but we also offer online modeling services (GLYCAM-Web!) to other researchers.  So, we have many opportunities to learn about computers and computing.

Some general topics include:

  • High-performance computing (HPC)
  • Programming
  • Systems administration (Sys Admin)
  • Website (Web) development and design

Relevant technologies include:

  • Databases (MariaDB/MySQL)
  • Website development and hosting, including:
    • HTML, CSS & Javascript
    • Django & Python
    • WordPress & PHP
    • Docker, Apache httpd, networking, etc.
  • Programming
    • Python
    • C & C++
  • Compute clusters
    • GPU computing
    • Scheduling and provisioning
  • Multi-user, multi-OS environment
    • Puppet, Zabbix, LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project), LDAP, NSF, networking, storage & backup
  • Hardware and software maintenance and support
